Missions at Park View
Thus says the Lord: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed.
Isaiah 56:1
Immediately after the church was constituted in 1899, the members took up a collection of $5.50 for missions. Since that day, Park View Baptist Church has sought to engage our world and share the good news of Jesus Christ. Most importantly, we believe that "doing missions" begins in our own community. The Park View Civic League meets in our fellowship hall once a month to discuss neighborhood issues and concerns. Another of our other local ministry partners is Edmarc, a hospice that provides care for terminally ill children. Each year, we host a dinner at the church to honor Edmarc's staff and volunteers.
Believing that Jesus calls us to care for the whole person, we engage in mission projects that meet physical as well as spiritual needs. Each month, our church helps prepare and serve a meal at the local homeless shelter and food bank Oasis. In 2008, for the first time, Park View will team up with Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless for a week to provide meals and shelter for a group of 60 individuals. In addition, our congregation has supported Habitat for Humanity and assembled seafarer's care packages every year for the many naval personnel and ship workers that call Portsmouth home. Whether it is reaching out to our next door neighbors or praying for those across the globe, Park View believes strongly that being faithful to the call of Christ means caring for others in his name.
